This is a sad story about a potbellied pig named Homer. This pig was my neighboor's pig and to my knowledge was being very neglected. On Thanksgiving day I snuck over into their yard where the pig was being kept in a shabby old dog kennel. I opened the gate to the kennel and a skinny and shivering pig crawled out of an old dog house, and the sad thing about this sight was the iceicles hanging from his tusks because of the fact of him being so cold. He had no straw or blankets to lay on and no food or water to be found. No droppings even existed because of the fact that he wasn't being fed. For the next two and a half weeks I would sneak up and feed and water Homer. I even gave him warm straw to lay on. He put on weight very quickly and I struck up a bond with him pretty fast. Then one day his owner approached me, started trouble saying that i was accusing her of not feeding him, and told me that if she saw me on her property, she'd have me arrested. Homer from then on was fed on average from what I observed, one to two times a week. I called the local Dog Officer who just happened to be her friend and recieved no help for the pig. I knew Homer would die. Last week we had a temature of 20 below two nights in a row. Very cold weather for Homer I imagined. As i was feeding my chickens and my potbellied pig " Lilly" yesterday, I watched as my neighboor's daughter walked over to Homers' kennel with a bowl of kitchen scraps,( one of the few times i ever saw him being fed) and call his name. Homer didn't come out of his house. She called again and he still wouldn't come. Then she went over to his small wooden house and kicked the side of it trying to wake him up. All the while I was seeing this I was thinking that poor little Homer couldn't even die somewhat in peace without that kid trying to get him up. Homer was dead, either by starvation, freezing to death or a combination of the two. I was sad that he had died in such an awful and lonely way, but knew that he was no longer suffering and cold up in that kennel on the hill. Little homer was in Piggy Heaven where no cruel person could ever hurt him again. My point in this story is, if you see animal neglect do something about it. Make the phone calls, tell people. NO ANIMAL should ever die because of our stupidiy and lack of kindness and caring. I will do whatever I can for any animal for the rest of my life, I wish I could of done more for Homer. -Sospita Animans ( Latin for " Savior to the animals")
